Mature Driver Improvement and Refresher Program

Senior drivers age 55 and over can take the 55 Alive Course online and get a discount on their auto insurance. Mature driver courses are very inexpensive compared to the long-term insurance discount savings they can obtain.

While prices vary from state to state, online courses often range from $19 to $30, and you’ll save anywhere from 5% to 20% on your insurance every year with the discount, usually for three years. After three years, you can simply renew your discount by taking a course again. Some organizations even offer shorter courses if you’ve already taken one class and only need a refresher course.

States That Mandate The Senior Discount

Many states require/mandate auto insurance companies provide the senior course discount when their senior residents complete the course. The following states mandate a discount for safe-driving classes: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming. Even if your state is not listed, most insurance providers will still give a discount for completing this course even though state law may not mandate or require the age 55 course auto insurance discount.

Check with your auto insurance agent or company for more details.

Eligibility varies according to state law and your car insurer's policies, although the discounts are most commonly offered to seniors age 55.  However, even if you're not eligible for a discount, a defensive driver training course will be worth considering, as it will help you improve your driving skills and stay safe on the road.

Summary

Many car insurance companies provide discounts to drivers who take senior defensive driving classes, and the discounts typically range from 5% to 20% off your car insurance premium. The courses usually take two to eight hours online, and they cover safety information, driving techniques and local driving laws. You do not have to complete the online course all at once.  You may stretch it out as long as you need or want.
